"Transformation"

At one point or another we've all gotten one, or at least dreamed of one, a makeover that is.

I used to have the longest hair. It was a proud staple of mine. As a woman of color, it's not easy to achieve length, trust me!

Me my junior year of college
I walked around everyday tossing that hair, turning it, and silently utterly to myself, "because you're worth it". Gotta love those Loreal commercials.

But that all came to a crashing halt my junior year of college.

I've always been the adventurous type - I'll try most things once, you only get one life, right?

Over Christmas break I decided to change things up. Give myself a MAKEOVER.

I dyed my hair, got highlights, the whole nine yards.

Suddenly, my coveted chocolate locks were falling out in the shower, in my brush...Lord knows...it was the complete opposite of what I thought was going to happen.

Instead of parading around my hot new "due", I was hiding it and myself from the rest of the college campus.

Pitiful, I know.

Well, I decided right then and there to take those lemons and turn them into lemon-aid.

After all, hair is just hair, it comes and it goes.

I opted for an inverted bob cut.

I remember driving to the salon with this picture of Ellen Barkin's cute Red Carpet "due"...I couldn't wait to see what it would look like on me.

***FINGERS CROSSED***

After 30 minutes of squeezing the life out of my sister's hand, my sincere apologies E, it was done!

I was officially transformed...made over...re-invented.

And let me tell you, IT FELT GREAT!

No more dead hair, no more dead ends, no more shame.

What'd you think?!
Me today
Ever since my makeover, I vowed to help all those courageous individuals out there in need.

It's amazing what a new look can do for your self-esteem.

Just last week two of my dearest friends asked me to help them, give them a "mini" makeover.

After all, as journalists part of our job description is looking good all day, everyday at a moment's notice. A skill I'm still in the process of mastering.

Naturally, being the fasionista that I am, I jumped at the opportunity to help these lovely ladies. It's amazing what a straightener, some hair spray, a little gloss and mascara can do!

Needless to say, they were unrecognizable after I was done with them.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

When it comes to makeovers I have a few tips:

1. Don't bite off more than you can chew, it's a gradual process, start with color, then a cut and go from there...make it easy for yourself.

2. If you can, hire a professional. BECAUSE YOU'RE WORTH IT!

3. Make sure you ask for something you can maintain, that "day of look" won't last forever.

4. Be courageous - try something new and different, remember, not even permanent dye is permanent.

5. Always do your research. Instyle.com has a FAB website that you can play around with for hairstyles, colors, and cuts...see what looks good and go from there.

With 2012 right around the corner, now's the perfect time to brainstorm a "new" look...why not ring in a new year in with a new you?!

I dedicate this post to my two fabulous friends, Eva and Robyn...you go ladies!!

Have any of you gotten makeovers, tell me about them, I'm dying to know!

"Lo Prices"

We all have fashion icons - individuals we pull inspiration from and try effortlessly to mimic.

I have quite a few myself,as I hope each and everyone of you do too, at the top of my list, Miss Jennifer Lopez.

diet-weight-lose.com
E.F.F.O.R.T.L.E.S.S

That's how I would describe her style in one word.

This woman knows how to take sexy, classy, and trendy and mesh them together all in one look in record time - now that's talent!

Yes, yes I know...she also has a pretty fab team...that never hurts.

I think style represents not only who you are, but where you come from.

I deeply appreciate the way in which her fashion sense has evolved - she's always stayed true to her experiences.

From her days riding the 6 train in NYC, to many an evening on the Red Carpet beneath the Hollywood lights, she's matured and her style says it all.

I'm a grad student. So trust me, I know what it's like to see negative signs in your bank account, it's not pleasant to say the least.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't maintain, let alone afford a trillion dollar wardrobe like Miss Lopez. Right now at least.

But thanks to her creativity, I don't have to and neither do you!

When I heard J.LO was partnering with Kohl's on a new collection of affordable yet fashionable clothes, I jumped for joy, literally.
google.com
This was my chance to channel my inner diva.

I rushed to the store and I tried everything on - from outerwear, to trousers, to sweaters, to shirts, to dresses, to boots, I was fully decked in the Jennifer Lopez Collection for hours on end.

And to my surprise, EVERYTHING WAS ON SALE!

Nothing, not one item I gravitated toward, was over $110.

I kid you not.In fact, the most expensive piece was a jacket with a faux fur collar trim priced at $105.

Great fashion, at "Lo" prices, nothing beats it.

Given the current state of the economy it's no secret that most everyone today lives on a budget. Having said that, I refuse to accept that one must sacrifice looking and feeling great about herself as a consequence.

No,no,no. Excuses won't get you out of this one my loves.

So, how do you beat the bank?

You have to think smart and be creative when shopping.

Most designers today, like Jennifer, are partnering with big time stores like Target, Sears, Walmart, and Kohl's to accommodate people's wallets.

The great thing about these stores - they send coupons in the mail.

Sales on top of sales people, can you hear the music?!

J.LO's pieces are timeless and timely - overly affordable.

As usual, I have a couple fav pieces, which I'll feature below. But I urge you to check the nearest Kohl's and experiment with the Jennifer Lopez Collection at your own leisure.
Seeing is Believing. Let me know what you think!

"I Salute You"

Happy Saturday!

In honor of Veteran's Day, I'm featuring some of the hottest "military inspired" pieces out there - from the runway to the racks.

Google.com
First and foremost, my thoughts, prayers, and thanks go out to all of you brave ladies and gents out who serve the great U.S. of A - past and present.

You inspire me and my wardrobe.

Sooo...

I know I'm not alone out there - everyone has at least one "camo" piece in their closet. It goes without saying.

I've always been a fan of army green - it's so rich and truthfully it can blend with almost anything.

Tan, camel, white, black, grey, even burgundy looks great.

I would say one major staple this season (every season really) are blazers - such game changers.

I am a HUGE fan of pieces that transform outfits from "classy" day to "sexy" night. Again, a worthwhile investment.

Military blazers are fabulous for four reasons:

1. Rich colors, usually featured in shades of army green or navy blue, black can be great as well

2. BUTTONS, BUTTONS, AND MORE BUTTONS!

3. Gold Trimming, the stitching adds the perfect "pop" of color

4. Slim, unique fit

I would suggest rocking a nice pair of skinny jeans, a simple tee, and some killer shoes to top off the outfit - remember the key is to draw attention to the blazer, so don't overdue basic pieces.

One designer who I adore and truly miss is the late, great, Alexander McQueen - he lived for military inspired fashions.

I mean, the man practically slept in combat boots.

It's the way he intertwined "toughness" with a splash of "elegance" that just blows my mind - it's ingenious.

McQueen's Pre-Fall 2011 Collection

Yet another fav of mine, the aforementioned, COMBAT BOOTS!

They've been a fan fav in Hollywood for a few years now and it makes sense why. They are fashionably, functional!

Leggings, a chunky sweater, great earring, and a great satchel and you're ready to roll.

Miss Ashley Tisdale does this pair justice.

google.com
F.Y.I.,Steve Madden has some great, inexpensive pairs to check out.

                   My biggest advice would be:

Don't be afraid to experience something new, play with a different side of you.

For all you "girlie girls" like myself out there, don't be swayed by the term "military" - you can always find ways to incorporate pieces that fit your personality and flare.

Have fun and remember, if you know any Vets out there, put their old pieces to good use.

Enjoy today's sales and remember...stay fabulous!!

"Thank You VOGUE!"

I'm elated. Read this. And you shall know why.

If you know me, even the slightest bit, chances are you have been privy to many a conversation featuring Beyonce.

My Love. My Mentor. My Icon.

Theybf.com

What is there not to L.O.V.E about a woman who, in her own right, walks, talks, and sings, FABULOSITY (Yes, I had to quote Miss Kimora Lee, my sincere apologies to all the haters).

Yesterday, the epic fashion powerhouse that is VOGUE, honored Bey and her uber chic lil' sis Solange with two coveted spots on their "Best Dressed" list....ahhh...to die!

I love these sisters for oh so many reasons. Mainly, 'cause they aren't afraid to be different.

I can directly relate. As I'm sure many of you out there can.

My older sister and I, nearly three years apart, are as different as black and white - and we wouldn't have it any other way.

In my book, two halves make a whole.

And from the looks of it, the Knowles' couldn't agree more.

It's so....REFRESHING...yes...that's the word...that light is being shined on two successful, talented, and stylish women of color (that just so happen to be related).

Furthermore, that a historical magazine with such rich history like VOGUE is celebrating them up front and center.

I can't wait to pick up this special, yes...special, edition ASAP. It graces newsstands November 15th, make sure you grab a copy, I know I'll be waiting in line.

See ya'll there!!

P.S. Follow-up to come on the other featured fashionistas and fashionistos that made the cut...

STAY TUNED AND STAY FABULOUS <3.

"Everything Rachel"

It's no secret that I live for creativity.

I mean, truthfully, who doesn't crave originality in a designer? Someone who doesn't shy away from "being different", but on the contrary, defines her brand by it?

I'm starting a new theme: Designer of the week!

This week, I'm featuring the lovely, talented, and ever so unique Rachel Roy.

So, why do I love her?

Glad you asked.

There's something to be said about a designer that understands what a woman needs and how to deliver it.

Rachel approaches style with an impeccable sense of precision and grace.

Cool shapes, opaque colors, edgy angles...everything is represented...and what I love most of all...THESE DESIGNS COMPLEMENT REAL WOMEN!

I went to Macy's the other day, tisk tisk, and stumbled across some new designs from the Rachel Rachel Roy collection - impressed, that I was.

I tried on a few dresses and some stellar outerwear pieces and surprisingly - everything fit true to size.

I can't say that happens frequently, a pleasant surprise indeed, haha.

A few of my favorite pieces from the collection, I think, are sound *investments, especially given the impending holidays.

Who said you're too old for Santa Clause??

Just a few goodies to make your heart melt.... faux fur and sequins...JUST A MUST!

"Fashionably, Functional"

collegefashions.net

The mere thought of winter leaves me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Well...OK... that's a slight exaggeration.

Snowflakes, although beautiful, don't really tickle my fancy the way winter fashions do.

I LIVE for versatility - the scarves, the boots, the capes, the berets, the colors....ah...simply fabulous.

So I decided, with Christmas just around the corner, to share some thoughts on staying warm and cute, even in the middle of a blizzard...'lest you forget... I live in Syracuse people!

It's pretty simple, actually, I can sum it up in two words:

...FASHIONABLY FUNCTIONAL...

That's the goal ladies and gents. Invest in fashion that serves a purpose.

That's it!

For those of you out there that are anything like me and my friends, well then, you too dread seeing those poor souls out there (you know exactly who I'm referring to) who sacrifice their common sense in the name of fashion. I can't say enough about how utterly foolish I find their rationale to be.

I say it loud and I say it proud: There is ABSOLUTELY nothing cute about shivering to death for the sake of looking cute.

Trust me. I'm all too familiar with the, "I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard, but obviously I am because left my coat at home in the middle of a snow storm" mentality and I'm here to say, it's transparent and frankly, it's unattractive.

So do yourself and consequently me a favor: BE MINDFUL, BUT BE FABULOUS!!

I treat building a wardrobe like I treat building a friendship, sometimes you have to give a little to get something great in return.

I see nothing wrong with spending a little extra dough if it means that you'll not only look great, but you'll feel great too.

Now, before you go off and justify those $300 pair of gucci gloves you've been eyeballing on bluefly.com (guilty), ask yourself, does it really make sense to spend that on ONE pair of gloves?

I've learned the value of investing when it comes to fashion.

Sure, I have my vices **cough, cough** shoes...shoes...and more shoes...

But I'm learning... the key to shopping is...shop with integrity, not impulsivity!

Here are some tips that I've found helpful, give them a try:

1. Buy winter staples and accessories in the spring and summer to save on deals, they are the best!

2. Always compare and contrast things before you make a final purchase, chances are you'll find the best bargain for your buck!

3. Reuse and Recycle! If something's functional, chances are it can somehow be stylish.

4. Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize!

5. Don't be afraid to invest in something pricey, IF and only IF it's worth it!

For great deals on winter fashions, check out ideeli.com and ruelala.com, I find a lot of fashionably functional items at good prices here!

"Beauty's in the eye of the Beholder"

I was so excited when I saw this picture of Demi Lovato at the Latin Grammy Awards, held last night in Las Vegas. For those of you out there who watched it, I know you echo my sentiments when I say....GO GIRLFRIEND!!!

First and foremost, I have to say that being in the public eye is not an easy job. Yes, I mean J.O.B.

I can't count the amount of times I leave my apartment without thinking of glancing at the mirror for fear of what I might see looking back at me.

I can't imagine being a teenager in her position. Being picked apart and compared to women decades older than me on a daily basis...it's seems...unreal to me.

Who wouldn't suffer from low self-esteem after that?

And if you're out there saying..."not me"... I beg you to answer truthfully.

It's public knowledge that Demi suffered with Bulimia for years, a struggle she confessed to while on tour. In fact, the pressure pushed her out of tour and into rehab.

And all the while, every time I would read an article about her I would subconsciously ask myself: to what extent would I push myself for social acceptance?

Well, in truth, I should be asking, HAVE I pushed myself for social acceptance?

She realized...no matter how beautiful I look, something's wrong if I don't feel it. Something's wrong if I don't see it.

Hence, the name of this blog, "Shattered Glass".

Nothing is perfect. No one is perfect. Each and every single one of us has imperfections. But within those imperfections lay the unique angles of our character.

When I saw this picture of Demi, this sexy, sharp, vibrant, overtly tight yet elegant dress, all I could think of was...WOW...how many of us are that courageous?

I'm a woman. So like many of you (reading this) body image is a struggle I deal with...constantly.

But what I've come to learn is this...life is about growing...

Freeing yourself from the confines of your own negativity and finding liberating outlets that help you let go and live free.

FASHION is my "freeing agent".

What we wear is what we feel, and what we feel... well... that defines where we are emotionally, mentally, and physically in life.

I'm not impressed that Demi chose this dress, on the contrary, who wouldn't? Its utterly stunning.

What stands out to me, is her courage, how she wears the dress...

Just read it, the freedom of her expression says it all.
Demi Lovato, Latin Grammy's 2011
What do you think about fashion as a "freeing agent?"
